Assessing Those Who Think Like a Learner

In my opinion, guided instruction with observation assessments works well with those who think like a learner.  Those who are independent learners (that take charge) can be asked to demonstrate learning through hands on activities and oral assessments.  The challenge is getting your students to think independently and be confident in their learning abilities.  In my professional judgment, I think assessments vary depending on the assignment or objective of the task.  Using technology to assess the learner is an effective way to receive results (blogging, online tasks, SmartBoard activities, etc).

I completely agree with you that observing the students complete task and work through activities is a great way to assess their learning. A student who is thinking and learning like a learner should be able to demonstrate their level of understanding without the use of a test.
